The Stradivari violin featured in this release is the marvellous 1716 "Maréchal Berthier" owned by Napoleon Bonaparte, who gave it to Alexandre Berthier, Marshal of France, Prince of Neuchatel and Wagram. After some interesting adventures, it was bought by Baron von Vecsey for his son Ferenc, a concert performer, who played it right up to his death in 1935.

Records of contemporary violin-makers suggest that Vuillaume later acquired the violin. In 1895 it passed into the hands of a French aristocratic family and thence to the violinmaker Germain in Paris. The Stuttgart firm of Hamma & Co. became the next owners in 1909
