Daniel Lopatin born July 25, 1982, best known by the recording alias Oneohtrix Point Never, is a Brooklyn-based American musician working in electronic and experimental music. He began releasing synth-based recordings in the mid-2000s, receiving initial acclaim for the 2009 compilation Rifts. Lopatin subsequently explored varied approaches, including sample-based composition and MIDI production, on releases such as Replica 2011 and R Plus Seven 2013. He signed to British label Warp in 2013. Since 2010, Daniel Lopatin's Oneohtrix Point Never project has never remained in one place for long. Returnal melded the analog synth tapestries of his earliest output to extreme noise, while the very next year Replica ditched the keys almost entirely to delve into mesmeric loop songs. But by 2013s masterful R Plus Seven, Lopatin was exploring the plasticity of synthesized computer sound: shape-shifting church organs into marimbas, rave anthem tropes into synthesized tropicalia, majestic choirs into intimate female coos. Released for Record Store Day, Commissions II is a sequel of sorts to Daniel Lopatins first collection of commissioned works that dropped a year ago. It features the unremitting Bullet Hell Abstraction two-parter which was initially put together for Red Bull Music Academy. The piece is based on the sonic and aesthetic patina of Japanese video games. Commissions II is an album by Oneohtrix Point Never released in 2015. This album is rated in the top 7 of albums on . I had never heard OPN's music until I attended an open air screening of Ridley Scott's Alien at Jodrell Bank observatory. Before the main event, there was a screening of Katsuhiro Otomo's Magnetic Rose with a new soundtrack commissioned just for the event. To be composed and performed live by Oneohtrix Point Never. What I heard astonished me. It was incredible. Such an imaginative and creative and diverse piece of music. I was overwhelmed. So much so, I completely forgot I was sat in a field freezing my arse off in the middle of butt-fuck nowhere in north west EnglandA few months later, it was record store day and this EP was on the release list. I had to have it. Since then I have bought as much OPN as I could get my hands on. It's safe to say I am now a fan.

i was there too, it was a warm night! Yes, it was in the middle of nowhere.

Being unique in the experimental world of music is a tough task, but somehow this EP is a wholly individual experience calling to mind aspects of Aube (with a much more 'linear' 'songwriting' approach?), Tim Hecker (with beats?), in a very abstract way, John Wiese (as filtered through Boards of Canada?), and in an even more abstarct way, ancient Chinese meditation music as interpreted by aliens. A strong EP, well worth some headphone time and a scotch.
