Soul Station is an album by jazz saxophonist Hank Mobley that was released in 1960 by Blue Note Records. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio and rooted in the hard bop style, Mobley's quartet features Art Blakey his past bandleader in the Jazz Messengers, and two bandmates from his time in the Miles Davis Quintet, Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers. Along with Roll Call, the LP which followed this release, this is one of Mobley's best-known albums. Rooted in the hard bop idiom, Mobley's quartet features some of the most talented players of the era, namely, Art Blakey, Wynton Kelly, and Paul Chambers. Soul Station. Recorded with a superstar quartet including Art Blakey on drums, Paul Chambers on bass, and Wynton Kelly on piano, it was the first album since Mobley's 1955 debut to feature him as a leader without any other accompanying horns. The clean, uncomplicated sound that resulted from that grouping helps make it the best among his albums and a peak moment during a particularly strong period in his career. Mobley's hot, brilliantly constructed solos have a smooth sound and an easy feel.
